Looking to switch up your style or achieve a specific hairstyle that calls for straight hair? Just because you embrace your natural hair doesn't mean you can't straighten it from time to time. Quite the opposite! There's no need to resort to chemical relaxers, which are irreversible. There are several tips and tricks to straighten or loosen naturally wavy, curly, coily, or kinky hair. These methods work differently depending on your curl pattern and how tight your coils are.
The Kardoune
An Algerian straightening method for all hair types: it's a cotton fabric strip used to wrap hair that has been previously tied into a ponytail. This ritual is often performed in the evening, and you sleep with it on.
Hair Rollers
Bring out your grandmothers' large hair rollers!
They can be used on all hair types; however, the result will vary depending on the hair's nature. Patience is also required for this method.
The Blowout
Using a flat brush and a hairdryer with adjustable temperature. This method is more suitable for wavy or slightly curly hair.
The Flat Iron
A flat iron, yes! And for all hair types, what's more! But not just any flat iron; you need one with ceramic plates. Although it has a higher price, it is less aggressive on the hair. However, you'll need to be careful to avoid a few mistakes to prevent damaging your hair.
Here are the 3 main mistakes to avoid!
Mistake #1: Beware of Humidity
The first thing to check before you start straightening your mane is the weather!
Indeed, you're well aware that water will inevitably bring back your curls. To prevent your frizz from returning, and to extend the life of your straightened hair as much as possible throughout the day, or if you're lucky, for several days in a row, you must ensure not only that there will be no rain but also that the humidity level is not too high. Also, be careful when you shower: use water that's not too hot to avoid steam, and wear a shower cap for any potential splashes!
Mistake #2: Not Preparing Your Hair Before Straightening
You must carefully prepare your hair before straightening. Use a straightening shampoo (2 applications of shampoo on the hair, followed by thorough rinsing). Depending on the straightening method used, you can follow with a mask or an oil bath, focusing on the ends. Finally, dry your hair more or less, again, depending on the chosen straightening method. If using a flat iron: absolutely do not apply oil to your hair (this will cause a frying effect that would damage your hair). Your hair must also be more than 90% dry. Opt for specific products; there are thermo-active creams and treatments available commercially designed to protect hair from the heat of the flat iron.
Mistake #3: Hot, But Not Too Hot
Blow-drying or flat ironing are the two most aggressive methods. The main cause? Heat... To minimize its effects, you need to adjust your styling tools (hairdryer and flat iron) optimally and find a happy medium. 160°C for fragile hair, 180°C for normal hair, and 200°C maximum for thick hair. Absolutely do not leave the flat iron or the hot air from the hairdryer in the same spot for more than 2 seconds.
