This easy-to-perform method is ideal for maintaining uniform locs and consistent thickness throughout their entire length.
Materials needed:
- A water-based gel or lotion suitable for your hair texture.
- Clips
- A rat-tail comb (optional)
Step 1:
Take a small amount of your product between your thumb and index finger, apply it to the new growth. Pinch your roots, twist and "palm roll" (palm rolling: this action consists of rolling the lock between the palms of your hands to perfect the lock and give it regularity) down to the end of the lock. Do not twist too tightly, as this risks thinning the roots in the short term (especially if root retwisting is very frequent).
Step 2:
Once the roots are twisted, do not let go of the lock; secure it with a clip so that it stays in place.
If you don't have clips, you can use elastic bands or braid your locks if they are long enough.
Repeat steps 1 and 2 on all your locks.
Step 3:
If you have a hair dryer hood, dry your locks for 45 minutes, then remove the clips, and style your hair as usual.
If you don't have a hair dryer hood, you can remove the clips, braid your hair or use elastic bands (this will be more comfortable than clips), and you can keep them in all day or just until the locks are dry.
Twisting locks has a drawback: the roots tend to unravel after some time. This method requires a lot of maintenance to keep the roots in place. It is not necessary to wash your hair once a week; once a month is sufficient. Wearing a scarf at bedtime is necessary; this helps the locks stay in place.
